Dusk Patrol – surf news & initiatives

One of the many admirable & awesome things the Surfrider Foundation does is Beach Cleanups. This Sunday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the Monterey Chapter will lead a cleanup at Sandholdt Beach in Moss Landing, south side of the harbor.

In an email yesterday, Surfrider Monterey reported that volunteers cleaned up 840 pounds of trash last month, along the Carmel Valley River behind the Crossroads Shopping Center in Carmel:

  • Bags (plastic) 79
  • Balloons, ribbons 0
  • Beverage containers 123
  • Caps, lids 5
  • Cigarette butts 22
  • Clothing, shoes, flip flops 15
  • Disposable (plastic) food containers, plastic utensils 43
  • Fishing net, lines, rope 2
  • Styrofoam/small plastic pieces of any size 34
  • Other items 62
  • Total: 385

That’s 840 pounds of trash and 385 items that will NOT be making their way to the Pacific Ocean! Photos are posted on Surfrider Monterey’s blog.

Visiting the coast with humans or other night-dwellers? Pack it in, pack it out.

Next month’s Surfrider Monterey Beach Cleanup is March 24th, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Salinas River & Salinas River Beach.
