Dusk Patrol – surf news & initiatives

If you missed the 2012 Mavericks Invitational last month, but want to see some big Northern California waves, check out Chasing Mavericks, newly released on DVD. I saw the movie when it was released in theaters last fall. Big waves call for big screens!

The biopic tells the story of surfer Jay Moriarty and his quest to ride the massive waves at Mavericks, just miles up the coast from his Santa Cruz home. The movie delves into Moriarty’s home life, his friendship with surfing mentor Frosty Hesson, and his intensive training to conquer the monstrous waves at Mavericks. It also captures the dangers above & below the mountainous walls of water, like treacherous rocks & great white sharks.

While filming the movie, actor Gerard Butler, who plays Frosty, was briefly hospitalized after a being caught in a two-wave hold-down at Mavericks. (Now that’s Method acting!) A wave pummeled Butler, knocking him deep into the ocean. As he spun underwater, another wave hit before he could reach the surface, sending him tumbling again. Fortunately, he lived to tell his big wave tale.

When it comes to Mavericks—whether it’s watching the action live at the Invitational or on screen—there’s no doubt about it… The athletes who conquer this famous surf break are truly awe-inspiring!
