Did you know:

  • 85% of the world’s population lives on the driest half of the planet?
  • 783 million people do not have access to clean water?
  • Water for irrigation and food production constitutes one of the greatest pressures on freshwater resources?

March 22 is World Water Day, an annual event that focuses attention on the importance of freshwater & advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This year’s theme, International Year of Water Cooperation, touches on how water cooperation builds peace, creates economic benefits, preserves water resources and protects the environment. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is leading both the 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation and World Water Day.

To commemorate World Water Day, Surfrider Foundation is holding a “3 Second Movie Contest.” Between now and March 15th, Surfrider is challenging supporters to create a 3-second movie for World Water Day. The subject can be anything related to water. They’ll compile the top movie selections into a short film set to release on March 22nd. They’ll also have prize packages for the top 3 winners.
