Interested in beer travel? Wanna know what it takes to fulfill a beer geek’s fantasy of a year in beer? Check out Teachings from the Tap: Life Lessons from Our Year in Beer by Merideth Canham-Nelson, one of the world’s most experienced female beer travelers.

Merideth, who proudly calls herself a “girl beer geek,” has been visiting breweries as a hobby for nearly 20 years. She and her husband, Chris, set out to fulfill their fantasy of becoming professional beer travelers & embarked on a year-long journey discovering the world through beer culture. The couple visited a major beer event or destination each month. Merideth’s adventures turned into a year of discovery about beer and herself, too.

Teachings from the Tap pairs each month of beer travel with a life lesson. My favorite chapter is “November: Look Beyond the Hype.” It documents their trip to San Diego, which Chris calls “one of the hottest beer scenes around.” It includes visits to Stone Brewing Co., Ballast Point Brewing, Pizza Port Brewing Co., Alpine Beer Co., Green Flash Brewing Co., Coronado Brewing Co., and many more. My favorite passage is at the end of the chapter on page 382. On the ferry trip from Coronado back to San Diego, Merideth examines the San Diego skyline and explains how it mirrors the San Diego beer scene—“multiple, showy standout breweries with lesser-known gems hidden in the shadows.” So, hearty cheers to the renowned big name breweries, the hidden treasures, and the beer travelers & writers, too!

Teachings from the Tap is available at Amazon.com in paperback or for the Kindle.
