Shark Bites – news

While sharks are a vital part of marine ecosystems, shark fishing and finning are responsible for a steep decline in the populations of the apex predators. Tens of millions of sharks disappear each year as they are caught or “finned.” (Finning is a cruel practice that involves catching a shark, cutting off the fins, and dropping it back into the sea to die.)

This month, the European Union (EU) officially adopted a strict ban on shark finning. Although shark finning had been prohibited since 2003, loopholes permitted some forms of it. Those enforcement loopholes are now closed.

Congratulations, sharks!
