I like my YA fiction like I like my adult fiction and my punk rock—dark, fun and super fast-paced. Amazon says The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey is for ages 12 and up. Today’s 12-year-olds must be pretty cool then because The 5th Wave is a pitch-black look at an alien invasion. And in this sci-fi page-turner, these aliens mean business.

Through alternating points of view, we see humans’ everyday existence turned on its head when the lights go out—and that’s just the beginning. These teens and children explore love, loss, death, separation, fear, trust, betrayal, and some serious weaponry while fighting for survival in a bleak, terrifying new world.

As in another of my favorite YA novels, The Hunger Games, we see glimpses of teen romance set against a backdrop of a world gone wrong, where deadly threats lurk around every corner. And, as in another wildly popular YA novel, Twilight, the cute love interest in this story may or may not be human.

I hear a movie is in development for The 5th Wave. I can’t wait to see it. Turn out the lights…
