Crave – food & drink

It’s no secret that vampires crave tasty red liquids. West Coast style red ales are one of my all-time-favorite beverages. Night dwellers also like all things dark—like dark ales, porters and stouts. So on a recent road trip on Highway 101 from the Monterey Bay to Crescent City and back, I hit a few brewpubs to sample the Northern California beer scene.

Here and in my next 3 posts are a few of my favorite beers:

Ukiah Brewing Company calls itself “America’s first organic brewpub.” It was the first certified organic brewpub and the second organic restaurant in the United States, when it was started in 2000. UBC, as it’s known by the locals, is located in downtown Ukiah, in Mendocino County.

The UBC Brew Crew focuses on hearty ales and lagers. The beers are unfiltered and handcrafted in small batches. My favorite was the Coops Stout, $5.00, an extra stout dark ale with a roasty, chocolatey character (6.7% ABV).

The food menu, which changes seasonally, was also impressive. The UBC Kitchen Crew uses local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. All the food is GMO-free and doesn’t contain hydrogenated oils, hormones or antibiotics. They make everything from scratch, including soups, sauces and desserts. The menu also calls out vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices to make it easy to choose what you like.
